I didn’t play this game as a kid so I have no memory of it, but playing it now was fun and very simple. The game is super simple. As offense you press A to hike the ball. You can then either press A to attempt to pass, or press B to do a lateral pass. The safest bet seemed to lateral pass then run. This ended in guaranteed gained yards. Essentially if you just rinse and repeat you will score eventually. One thing I noticed is that running diagonal seemed to make it very difficult for the defense to tackle you. You could wiggle around for a bit then run a diagonal route and usually be safe for a while.

On defense you can choose between two different defensive players. The letters are above the players heads so you know which one you will get. The CPU would almost always do a lateral pass to one side or the other. If you chose right you would be able to tackle them with no issues.

As a speedrun it’s not interesting enough for me to want to play it over and over. In fact, I don’t think I would play it again. I looked into it though and it appears that the you can only speedrun the Japanese version. This is because when you score a touchdown it counts down the remaining time in the half. This speeds the game up drastically. In the US version the time continues and you have to wait for it to end before it will switch.
